Municipal Elections were held in Myanmar after 60 years for electing the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC). This election is considered as a test for Myanmar as it is undergoing transition from military rule to democracy.

The voters voted under severe voting restrictions and limited power of the councilors being elected. Voting was limited to one person per household and the age of the candidates were narrowly prescribed. Further there was a ban on political parties taking part in the campaign.

Yangon city also known as Rangoon and was previous capital of Myanmar. Now Naypyidaw city is capital of Myanmar. Yangon is the Myanmar`s largest city in terms of population and is the most important commercial centre.
