Mumbai Indians Clinch ‘WPL Title 2025’ for the 2nd Time by Defeating Delhi Capitals

In March 2025, Mumbai Indians Women cricket team (MI-W) clinched their Women’s Premier League (WPL) title 2025 by defeating Delhi Capitals  Women cricket team(DC-W) by 8 runs in the final held at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai (Maharashtra). This victory marks Mumbai Indians (MI) to become the first team in WPL history to clinch the title twice, following their debut win in 2023.

  • Mumbai Indians (MI) were captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, while Delhi Capitals (DC) were led by Captain Meghann Moira Lanning.
  • The 3rd edition of the tournament was held from 14 February to 15 March 2025 with matches played in Vadodara (Gujarat), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh,UP) and Mumbai (Maharashtra).

Prize Money:

The winners ‘MI-W’ received a cash prize of Rs 6 crore, while the runner-up ‘DC-W’ received Rs 3 crore. 

About Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025:

i.The WPL is a women’s franchise Twenty20 (T20) cricket league organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
ii.WPL 2025, branded as TATA WPL 2025 featured 5 teams: Gujarat Giants -Women cricket team(GG-W), Royal Challengers Bengaluru -Women cricket team(RCB-W), Mumbai Indians -Women cricket team(MI-W), Delhi Capitals -Women cricket team(DC-W) and UP Warriorz -Women cricket team(UPW-W).

iii.The tournament followed a double round-robin league stage, with playoffs determining the champion.

Note: The first edition of the WPL was held in 2023 and was won by Mumbai Indians by defeating Delhi Capitals in the finals.

Highlights:

i.Captain and India International Cricketer, Harmanpreet Kaur anchored MI-W’s innings with a match-defining 66 runs off 44 balls, rescuing the team after early collapses.

ii.Amelia Charlotte Kerr delivered a clutch bowling spell of 2/25, dismissing key batters Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen.

iii.Natalie Ruth Sciver-Brunt contributed a vital 30 runs and partnered with Harmanpreet Kaur to steady MI’s innings and Hayley Matthews (2/21) and Shabnim Ismail (2/28) restricted DC’s chase in the death overs.

  • During the final, MI-W batter Natalie Ruth Sciver-Brunt became the first player to score 1000 runs in WPL history.

iv.Key Performances: Harmanpreet Kaur scored 66 in the final, finishing the season with 320 runs, Amelia Kerr took 16 wickets, the tournament’s 2nd-highest, and scored over 200 runs and Nat Sciver-Brunt topped the runs chart with 493 runs at an average of 70.42.
