MoTA and MoRD Signed Joint Communication to Promote Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities Among Tribal Women SHGs

Ministry-of-Tribal-Affairs-and-Ministry-of-Rural-Development-Sign-a-Joint-Communication-to-Promote-Sustainable-Livelihood-Opportunities-Among-Tribal-Women-SHGs-in-Rural-IndiaOn August 18, 2020, Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) and Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) inked a Joint Communication to promote sustainable livelihood opportunities among tribal women Self Help Groups (SHGs) under National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).

  • The joint communication was inked by Deepak Khandekar, Secretary MoTA and Nagendra Nath Sinha, Secretary, MoRD under which A series of activities will be carried out by both the Ministries to improve the economic opportunities available to tribal women.

Key Points:

–MoTA is the nodal Ministry for the welfare of tribals while there are 37 other Ministries, who have to spend assigned percentage of their budget as per mechanism designed by National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, under Tribal sub Plan or Schedule Tribe Component (STC) for welfare of tribals. NITI Aayog and Secretary Tribal Affairs have been monitoring STC component of such Ministries regularly as per the mandate given to the MoTA in 2017. 

–The total Central budget under STC component during FY 2020-21 is Rs. 51,000 crore.

–As per STC mechanism, MoRD is spending about Rs.20000 cr on tribal welfare in 3 main schemes namely Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY), Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). 

Other Participants during signing: Arjun Munda, Union Minister MoTA, Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister MoRD, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Renuka Singh Saruta, Minister of State (MoS) MoTA, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, MoS, MoRD and several senior officers.

On February 27, 2020,  Arjun Munda , launched the “Programme for Capacity Building of Scheduled Tribe (ST) Representatives in Local Self Governments (LSG)” in Bhubaneswar, Odisha and also launched “1000 Spring Initiatives” and an online portal on GIS (Geographic Information System)-based Spring Atlas with hydrological and chemical properties of the Springs during the event.
