Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State (MoS), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has officially launched the ‘first’ SemiconIndia FutureDesign roadshow in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- Gujarati Industrialists and High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) invested Rs. 1500 crore in faith in AtmaNirbhar Bharat and IndiaTechade to boost Gujarat’s startup ecosystem.
At the ceremony, the Minister also unveiled the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)- tested and qualified NavIC Receiver Chipsets, which are ready for commercial deployment. [ NavIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation].
First SemiconIndia FutureDesign Roadshow – 2022
The SemiconIndia FutureDesign Roadshows under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), seeks to encourage Startups in the Semiconductor Design and Innovation space by providing incentives worth Rs. 100 crore per device at the design stage.
Design Linked Incentive (DLI)
The DLI Scheme is announced by the MeitY.
Objective: To offer financial incentives and design infrastructure support for semiconductor designs for Integrated Circuits (ICs), Chipsets, System on Chips (SoCs), Systems & IP Cores, and semiconductor linked design during a 5-year period.
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is in charge of implementing the DLI Scheme as the nodal agency.
India Semiconductor Mission (ISM)
Under the aegis of the MeitY, the Government of India (GoI) announced the ISM in December 2021 with an incentive outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to encourage investments in the strategic semiconductor sector.
- ISM is a specialized and independent Business Division within the Digital India Corporation.
Following that, the Gujarat government announced its Semiconductor Policy 2022-27 and intends to establish a Semicon City in Dholera, Gujarat.
- Vedanta and Foxconn recently announced the establishment of a Greenfield Semiconductor Fab unit in Dholera, Gujarat.
Performance of the Indian Electronics Sector
i.Since 2014, India’s electronics sector has shown remarkable growth, rising from around Rs. 1,10,000 crore in 2014 to around Rs. 6,00,000 crore in 2022.
ii.There were only two Mobile Manufacturing units in 2014, and it has greatly increased to over 200 by 2022.
iii.The Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes facilitated India’s mobile exports, which were almost zero in 2015–16, rise up to Rs. 27,000 crore in 2019–20, and to Rs. 45,000 crore within the first year of the PLI Scheme.
iv.Since semiconductors are the bedrock of technology, they are essential for India’s rising digital economy, which is predicted to surpass USD 1 trillion by 2025/2026.
v.The National Policy on Electronics 2019 intends to establish India as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM).
