Mihail Popsoi, Deputy Prime Minister(PM) and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, visited India for the first time for an official visit from 15th December to 16th December 2024 at the invitation of External Affairs Minister(EAM) Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
- The visit aimed to deepen India-Moldova bilateral ties and foster a stronger partnership between the two countries.
- They held bilateral talks on aspects including political, trade, cultural, and people-to-people ties and also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Highlights of the Visit:
On 15th December 2024 EAM S. Jaishankar along with Moldovan Deputy PM Mihai Popsoi jointly inaugurated the Embassy of Moldova in New Delhi, Delhi, reflecting the shared commitment of the two nations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992.
Moldova signs ISA Framework Agreement:
Moldova has joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) by signing the ISA Framework Agreement in an effort to promote clean energy and sustainability through the ISA platform.
- The agreement was signed between EAM S. Jaishankar and Moldovan Deputy PM Mihai Popsoi in New Delhi, Delhi.
Note: In November 2024, Armenia became the 104th full member of the ISA.
About International Solar Alliance (ISA):
i.International Solar Alliance (ISA) is an inter-governmental treaty-based organization formed to boost solar growth and reduce the cost of financing and technology.
- The ISA was jointly launched by India and France in 2015, in Paris on the sidelines of the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
ii.ISAÂ is the first international inter-governmental organization to be headquartered in India.
iii.ISA consists of a total of 120 Member and Signatory countries of which 100 countries submitted documents of ratification to become full members of the ISA.
iv.ISA’s mission is to mobilise USD 1 trillion of investments in solar by 2030.
MoUs signed :
i.India and Moldova signed a Declaration of Intent to establish a Migration and Mobility Partnership between the two countries.
- The partnership aims to boost cooperation in areas such as labor migration and mutual and exchange of expertise.
ii.India and Moldova also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an aim to boost cooperation and facilitate the exchange of information on training programmes for diplomats.
- The MoU was signed by Raj Kumar Srivastava, Dean of the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS), and Ana Taban, Ambassador of Moldova to India.
