On September 9, 2021, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Ministry of Education (MoE) released the 6th NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) Rankings 2021 of Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) of India in 11 categories from New Delhi.
- The ranking has been topped by IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Madras, Tamil Nadu in the overall category which is followed by IISc (Indian Institute of Science) Bengaluru, Karnataka at 2nd and IIT Bombay, Maharashtra at 3rdplace.
Basis of Ranking:
The rankings for all Indian colleges and universities given by the Ministry were based on 5 parameters with 100 marks each viz. teaching, learning, and resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcome; Outreach And Inclusivity; and Perception.
- Each of these five parameters has 2 to 5 sub-parameters. A total number of 16 – 18 sub-parameters are used for ranking.
- The following two additional sub-parameters were included in methodology developed for ranking institutions under “Research Institutions”:
i.Research Papers published in journals covered in the First Quartile of Journal Citation Report (JCRQ1)
ii.H Index
Categories of ranking:
The ranking consisted of 4 categories, namely Overall, University, College and Research Institutions and 7 subjects viz. Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Architecture, Medical, Law and Dental in 2021.
- Research institutions have been ranked for the first time in India Rankings 2021.
Key Points:
i.IIT- Madras retains 1st position in Overall Category as well as in Engineering for the 3rd consecutive year.
ii.IISc, Bengaluru tops the University as well as Research Institution category introduced for the first time in India Rankings 2021.
iii.All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi retains top slot in Medical for the 4th consecutive year.
iv.Jamia Hamdard tops the list in Pharmacy subject for the 3rd consecutive year.
v.Miranda House College, New Delhi kept 1st position amongst colleges for the 5th consecutive year.
vi.IIT Roorkee replaced IIT Kharagpur to grab top position for the first time in Architecture subject.
vii.National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore retains its first position in Law for the 4th consecutive year.
viii.Colleges in Delhi dominate ranking of colleges with five colleges out of first 10 colleges from Delhi.
ix.IIM Ahmedabad tops in Management subject.
x.Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, secure 1st position in “Dental” category.
