Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide Swachh Bharat Abhiyan that aims to clean up the country in the next five years. He has also nominated nine people to carry forward the campaign. The nominees include Anil Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Sashi Tharoor and Kamal Haasan.
Swachh Bharat (Clean India) is an national level campaign by government of India covering 4,041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to accomplish the vision of ‘clean India’ by 2nd October 2019, 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and is expected to cost over Rs 62,000 crore.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan will last a span of five years and cover 4,041 statutory towns. The earlier mission on sanitation, Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, will be restructured into Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The scheme aims to stop open defecation through construction of individual household latrines, cluster toilets and community toilets.
