Development of National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, GujaratThe Ministry of Culture (MoC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) for Cooperation in Development of National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat.

  • National Maritime Heritage Complex is India’s first of its kind facility dedicated to the legacy of Maritime Heritage of India. It will be developed at the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) site of Lothal, Gujarat.

National Maritime Heritage Complex:

i.The NMHC will be developed in an area of around 400 acres with structures like National Maritime Heritage Museum, Lighthouse Museum, Heritage Theme Park, Museum Themed Hotels & Maritime themed eco-resorts, Maritime Institute.

ii.The NMHC will recreate the ancient Lothal City, one of the prominent cities of the ancient Indus valley civilization dating to 2400 BC.

Efforts of MoC towards the Development of NMHC:

i.The MoC will work with the MoPSW to support the NMHC to showcase the Maritime heritage of India and during the construction, operation, sustenance, maintenance and growth of NMHC the MoC will provide technical understanding on design, lighting and digital technology.

ii.The MoC will also support the NMHC fundraising through the National Culture Fund (NCF) in the form of a grant, donation, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and foreign contributions.

iv.Through the NCF, MoC has released Rs 15 crore (RS 5 crore per year) in 3 years to establish NMHC.

v.Under the Mausam Project, MoC will provide the required collaboration to NMHC for all maritime heritage subjects.

Prahlad Singh Patel, Union Minister of State (IC) for Culture and Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of State (IC) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways were present during the signing ceremony held in Transport Bhawan, New Delhi.

On January 22, 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding-MoU was signed between the Gujarat Government and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar to set up India’s largest multi-model logistic park at Virochan Nagar near Sanand in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat.
