On May 29,2021, The Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, launched an Author Mentorship programme ‘YUVA (Young, Upcoming and Versatile Authors) – Prime Minister’s Scheme for Mentoring Young Authors’ to Train Young and Budding Authors (Below 30 Years of age).
Objective: To promote reading, writing, and book culture of Indians; to project Indian writings globally.
Key points:
i.Implementing Agency: The National Book Trust, India under the Ministry of Education will be the Implementing Agency of the scheme. They will execute the scheme in a phase-wise manner under well-defined stages of mentorship.
ii.Publisher: The books formulated under the scheme will be published by National Book Trust, India
iii.The book will also be translated into other Indian languages ensuring the exchange of culture and literature, thereby promoting ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’.
iv.The young authors selected under the scheme will get chances to interact with some of the world’s best authors and participate in literary festivals, etc.
v.YUVA is a part of the New India@75 Project (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav) to encourage young writers to write on themes like Unsung Heroes, Freedom Fighters, Unknown and Forgotten Places and their role in National Movement, to promote Indian heritage, culture and knowledge system.
The process under YUVA:
i.Selection: Under YUVA, 75 authors will be selected from 1 June – 31 July 2021 through an All India Contest, and the winners will be announced on 15 August 2021.
ii.Mentorship: After selection, the young authors will be trained by eminent authors/mentors.
iii.Publishing: The manuscripts will be readied by 15 December 2021 and those books will be launched on 12 January 2022 on the occasion of National Youth Day (Yuva Diwas).
iv.Scholarship: Under the scheme, an author will get a consolidated scholarship of Rs 50,000 per month for a period of 6 months.
Note – YUVA will help in achieving the goals & objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
