The Ministry of Coal successfully organized an event in New Delhi, Delhi featuring the Star Rating Awards Ceremony for Coal & Lignite Mines, a Stakeholder Consultation on Mine Developers cum Operators (MDOs), and the release of the Coal Directory of India.
- The Chief Guest of the event was Union Minister Gangapuram Kishan Reddy, Ministry of Coal, and the Guest of Honour was Union Minister of State (MoS) Satish Chandra Dubey, Ministry of Coal.
- The event aimed to recognize outstanding performances in the coal sector, foster stakeholder engagement, and provide insights into the industry’s future.
Star Rating Awards:
i.The Star Rating Awards acknowledge the outstanding performance of coal and lignite mines, aiming to promote responsible mining practices, enhance industry standards, and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
ii.The survey for the ratings is conducted in around 380 mines and the performances are assessed based on the seven modules, such as mining operation-related parameters, environment, adoption of technology and best mining practices, economic performances, rehabilitation and resettlement, employees/workers compliance and safety and security.
iii.The Ratings are awarded on a scale from Five Star to No Star, based on the holistic assessment of each mine’s performance. The ratings cover three categories of mines:
- Underground Mines (UG)
- Opencast Mines (OC)
- Mixed Mines
iv.43 coal mines achieved 5 star rating for the year 2022-23 for exceptional performance in mining operations, environmental practices, and worker safety.
- 4 mines ranked first, 2 ranked second, and 6 ranked third.
v.The Ministry of Mines also presented “Adarsh Karmayogi Awards” to 13 employees who completed over 100 courses on the iGOT((Integrated Government Online Training) Karmayogi portal.

Stakeholder Consultation:
Union Minister of Coal, G. Kishan Reddy, led an interactive session with MDOs, addressing key issues related to inter-ministerial coordination and collaboration with ministries like Power, Railways, and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India (MOEF&CC).
Coal Directory :
It will serve as a comprehensive repository of insights into coal and lignite production, sectoral dispatches, and other critical aspects of the coal industry.
NLCIL mines get five-star rating of Union Coal Ministry
Neyveli(Tamil Nadu, TN) based NLC India Limited (NLCIL) mines achieved top scores and 5-star rating in the survey of lignite and coal-based open cast mines in India in the year 2022-23.
i.The Barsingsar lignite mine in Rajasthan, lignite mine 1 A, lignite mine 1 in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu (TN) and Talabira II and III coal mines in Odisha secured first place in the survey of lignite and coal-based open cast mines in the country in the year 2022-23.
- The Barsingsar lignite mine secured the second position at the national level while lignite mine 1 A ranked seventh
ii.NLCIL’s lignite Mine II in Neyveli achieved a four-star rating.
Mine Opening Permission module :
On November 7, 2024, the Ministry of Coal has launched the Mine Opening Permission module on the Single Window Clearance System (SWCS) portal.
- This transformative initiative aims to simplify and accelerate the approval process for opening coal mines.

i.On 24th August 2024, Amrit Lal Meena, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, reviewed the ongoing development of the Indian Coal Mines Safety Report Portal to assess the safety status of coal companies.
ii.The Ministry of Coal (MOC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and Natural Gas (MOP & NG) has facilitated a Joint Venture (JV) agreement between two Maharatna CPSEs, Coal India Limited (CIL),Kolkata, (West Bengal, WB) and GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL),New Delhi, (Delhi) to set up a Coal-to-Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) project in West Bengal utilising Surface Coal Gasification (SCG) technology.
