World Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day - June 27 2023The United Nations (UN)’s Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day is annually observed across the world on 27th June to raise awareness about MSME’s contribution in achieving the 2030 Agenda of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This day also highlights the role of MSMEs in global economy, promoting innovation and creativity, and creating employment internationally.

  • 27th June 2023 marks the 6th Anniversary of MSME Day.
  • The global celebration of MSME day is led by the International Trade Centre (ITC).

Background:

i. On 6th April 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/71/279 and proclaimed the 27th June of every year as the Micro-, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day.

ii. The first-ever MSME day was observed in collaboration with theInternational Council for Small Business (ICSB), the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the UN on 27th June 2017.

2023 Events:

i. On 27th June 2023, a dynamic event for Galvanizing MSMEs Worldwide by Supporting Women and Youth Entrepreneurship and Resilient Supply Chains has been organised by the ICSB in the UN headquarters (UNHQ) New York, the United States of America (USA), to celebrate the crucial role of MSMEs in achieving the 2030 Agenda for SDGs.

ii. The event will feature engaging panel discussions, inspiring keynote speeches, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities by a group of experts, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders who are passionate about supporting MSMEs.

Key Points:

i. MSMEs are an essential component in implementing SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure).

ii. MSMEs account for up to 90% of businesses, 60% to 70% of employment, and they account for 50% (half) of global Gross domestic product (GDP).

iii. 600 million jobs will be needed by 2030 to absorb the growing global workforce, which makes SME development a high priority for many governments around the world.

Udyami Bharat- MSME Day 2023 in India:

On the eve of International MSME Day (27th June 2023), the Ministry of MSME, Government of India (GoI) is celebrating ‘Udyami Bharat (Enterprising India) -MSME Day’ on 27th June, 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.

Objective:

The objective is to improve the business environment for MSMEs, encourage innovation and development of new products and services, promote regional development and reduce regional disparities, create market opportunities in both domestic and global markets and also to encourage MSMEs to adopt sustainable practices across India.

Key People:

Narayan Rane, Union Minister for MSME, Chief Guest and Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, Union Minister of State (MSME), Guest of Honour in this programme.

MSME Ministry launched Champions 2.0 Portal and Mobile App to support MSMEs projects

Launches:

i. The Ministry of MSME launched various initiatives for growth and development of MSMEs such as CHAMPIONS 2.0 Portal and Mobile App for Geo-tagging of Cluster Projects and Technology Centres at the event.

ii. The Champions 2.0 Portal and app are designed to address the challenges faced by MSMEs in managing their cluster projects efficiently.

iii. The initiative will help streamline the management of cluster projects through advanced geo-tagging technology, which will enable real-time monitoring, tracking, and evaluation of projects, ensuring transparency and effective resource utilisation.

Other programmes at the event:

i. Results for ‘MSME Idea Hackathon 2.0’ will be declared and ‘MSME Idea Hackathon 3.0’ for Women Entrepreneurs will be launched.

ii. The event includes certificate distribution to Gold and Silver Zero Defect and Zero Effect (ZED) certified MSMEs, and digital transfer of Rs.400 crore, Margin Money subsidy to 10,075 Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) beneficiaries and signing of Memorandum of Understandings (MoU)s will also be included among various organisations of the GoI.
