Maldives’ Former President Mr Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison after being found guilty of terrorism. Nasheed ordered the arrest of a Chief judge when he was in power in 2012. He was Maldives’ first democratically elected leader and he ended the autocratic 30-year rule of Yameen’s half-brother, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Countries including India and the United States have expressed concern about Nasheed’s treatment and trial.

The verdict is likely to increase the political instability in the world famous luxury tourist destination and appears likely to provoke street violence. Maldives is a string of more than 1,100 coral islands popular as a holiday paradise.
