Maharashtra with Rs 3,18, 497 crore, has topped among the top 10 Indian states with highest Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25) and even in April 2025 with total GST collection of Rs 41,645 crore. However, the state’s financial capital’s growth has decreased from 13% (in April 2024) to 11% (in April 2025).
- Gujarat secured the second position with Rs.1,74,938 crore and Karnataka at the third place with Rs.1,43,023 crore.
- Also, total GST revenue collection reached at Rs 21.36 lakh crore in 2024, the highest since the introduction of GST in 2017. This marks an increase of 8.86% compared to the last year’s collection.
- As per the Ministry of Finance (MoF)’s latest data, total GST revenue collections reached at Rs 2,36,716 lakh crore in April 2025, reflecting an annual growth rate of 12.6%.
Key Points:
i.Among major GST-contributing states, Gujarat has witnessed highest annual growth in GST collections i.e. 13% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) increase. It has registered total GST revenue of Rs 14,970 crore for April 2025.
- According to the GST Council data accessed via Forbes, Gujarat registered a total GST revenue collection of Rs 1,74,938 crore for FY25.
ii.Among all Indian Union Territories (UTs), Lakshadweep reported an exponential growth of 287% in GST revenue collection (as of April 2025).
iii.Arunachal Pradesh (AR) recorded a 66% growth in GST collection, which is highest among all Northeastern Indian states, followed by Meghalaya (50%) and Nagaland (42%).

About Goods and Services Tax (GST):
i.GST was formally launched by the Government of India (GoI) on July 01, 2017 in India.
ii.It is a comprehensive indirect tax that replaced around 17 cascading taxes and cesses levied by the central government and state governments such as excise duty, service tax , Value-Added Tax (VAT), among others.
iii.Currently, the primary GST slab rates for any regular taxpayer are: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.
