5 Madhya Pradesh handicraft products receive GI tag new

The Geographical Indication (GI) Tag has been granted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I) to several products of Madhya Pradesh (MP), which include 5 handcrafts product, 1 Agricultural product, 1 Food stuff, 1 Textile product.

  • The 5 handicraft products include Gond Painting of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior Handmade Carpet, Bhedaghat stone craft (Jabalpur), wrought iron crafts (Dindori), and Waraseoni handloom sarees & Fabrics (Balaghat).
  • Sharbati Gehu (wheat which is also called The Golden Grain), registered by the GI Registry in the agricultural product category.
  • Morena Gajak, a kind of sweet, has received the GI tag in the food ingredient category.  
  • Ujjain Batik print has received the GI tag in the textile category.

Additional info:

i.Sharbati wheat is a regional variety of wheat grown in Sehore and Vidisha districts, the grains have a golden sheen. Sehore district is the largest producer of Sharbati wheat in India

ii.Gond painting is a traditional art of Madhya Pradesh and belongs to the Gond tribe. Patangarh village of Dindori district is famous for gond paintings.

  • The Padma Shri awardee Gond artist, Bhajju Shyam stated that the Gond paintings explain about nature, trees, plants, animals, moon, sun, river, drains, God and Goddesses

iii.Morena Gajak is a popular sweet treat made with jaggery, peanuts and sesame seeds.

About GI Tag:

i.A GI tag is a sign used on products which have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

  • GI Tag ensures that no one other than the registered authorised user is allowed to use the name of the popular product.

ii.It is used for industrial products, foodstuff, agriculture products, manufactured, spirits Drinks, and handicrafts.

iii.India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999, which has come into force with effect from September 15, 2003.

  • A GI registry has been formed under the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), MoC&I, to administer the GI of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, to protect the GI of goods.
  • The GI registry is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

iv.A GI tag can be applied by any association of persons, producers, organizations, or authorities established by or under the law.
