L&T has delivered India’s first launch hardware for Gaganyaan launch vehicleOn November 17, 2020, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) delivered First Hardware – a Booster Segment – ‘S-200’ for Gaganyaan Launch Vehicle to ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) in a virtual flag-off ceremony. The Booster Segment has been delivered ahead of the Scheduled delivery date.S-200 is world’s third-largest solid propellant rocket booster.

The Virtual flag-off ceremony was presided over by Dr K Sivan, Chairman, ISRO.

Key Points:

i.The Booster segment was produced at L&T’s Powai Aerospace Manufacturing Facility, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

ii.The Critical booster segment has a diameter of 3.2 meters, 8.5 meters in length and weighs 5.5 tons.

iii.L&T is playing a vital role in powering ISRO’s Human Space Flight Programme (HSFP).

iv.S200 will be the solid propellant booster for the GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) Mk III Launch vehicle.

Gaganyaan –  India’s Human Space Flight Programme (HSFP):

i.ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission aims to send a three-member crew to space for a period of 5-7 days by 2022 when India completes 75 years of Independence.

ii.Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are providing technological support.

iii.GSLV Mk III Launcher will be the launch vehicle for the mission.

iv.The programme is set for launch in August, 2022.
