On 6th October 2020, at the emergency session of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan (also known as Jogorku Kenesh) appointed Sadyr Zhaparov, as the Acting Prime Minister(PM) of Kyrgyzstan. He was appointed following the resignation of the former PM Kubatbek Boronov amid post-election vote rigging protests.
About Sadyr Zhaparov:
i.Sadyr Zhaparov was born in 1968 in the northern Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan.
ii.Sadyr Zhaparov, the founder of the Mekenchil party (opposition party) was elected twice to the parliament of Kyrgyzstan.
iii.He was detained in 2017 to serve a sentence of 11 years and 6 months for taking hostage a government official in 2013.
iv.The parliament nominated Sadyr Zhaparov as the prime minister after he was released from the prison following the protest.
About the protest:
i.Major Parties out of the 16 parties that took part in the election on 4th October denied to accept the results and the election commission annulled the votes due to the uprising protests.
ii.The People’s Coordination Council formed by the several opposition parties dissolved the parliament and assumed the state power, refusing to acknowledge the interim cabinet of Zhaparov.
iii.On 6th October 2020, the Secretary General of United Nations(UN), Antonio Guterres invited the parties of Kyrgyzstan to discuss and agree on a way forward within the constitutional framework.
iv.The Protestors also released the former President Almazbek Atambayev who was serving a 11-year sentence for corruption.
