Badminton Korea Open 2023, Satwik-Chirag win fourth title of year

The Indian Badminton Players Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the Men’s Doubles title by defeating Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto at the finals of the Korea Open 2023.

  • The Korea Open 2023 marks Chirag and Satwik’s fourth victory following the Swiss Open, Asian Championships and Indonesia Open in 2023.
  • The Super 500 badminton tournament, Korea Open 2023 held from 18th – 13th July 2023 at Jinnam Stadium, Yeosu, South Korea.

About Chirag and Satwik pair:

i.Korea Open 2023 marks their 3rd Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 500 title.

  • The Chirag and Satwik pair became the first Indian pair to win the Korea Open.

ii.The Chirag and Satwik pair won many titles including 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold, Thomas Cup gold, bronze medal in 2022 World Championships and also won Super 300 (Syed Modi and Swiss Open), Super 500 (Thailand and India Open), Super 750 (French Open) and Indonesia Open Super 1000.

Korea Open 2023:

i.The Korea Open 2023 is the seventeenth tournament in the 2023 BWF World Tour calendar and the fifth Super 500 event of the season.

ii.The 30th edition of Korea Open is organized by Badminton Korea Association with sanctions from the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

  • Total Prize money: USD420,000

iii.The BWF World Tour is divided into six levels, namely World Tour Finals, four Super 1000, six Super 750, seven Super 500, and 11 Super 300.In addition, the BWF Tour Super 100 level offers ranking points.

Satwik set two Guinness world records with fastest badminton hits in controlled environments and on-field

i.India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has set the Guinness world record for the fastest hit by a male player in badminton with a 565 kilometre/hour(351 milesperhour) smash.

ii.He broke the previous record of 493 km/h (306.34 mph) by Malaysian Tan Boon Heong in 2013.

iii.Malaysia’s Tan Pearly also set the Guinness world record for the fastest female badminton hits with a remarkable speed of 438 km/h (about 272 mph).

iv.Satwik’s smash was conducted in a controlled environment at the Yonex factory gymnasium in Soka, Saitama, Japan.

  • Rankireddy and Tan Pearly’s world record attempts were achieved on April 14, 2023, and were confirmed by the Guinness World Records judges based on speed measurement findings from that day.

On-field Record:

i.Satwik also set the fastest badminton hit on field by hitting 500 km/h (310 mph) at the Men’s Doubles quarterfinals of 2023 Korean Open with Chirag Shetty against Japan’s Taku Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi.

ii.Previous record was set by India’s Lakshya Sen with a smash of 420 km/h during the men’s singles final of the 2023 Canadian Open.
