Chandigarh University won the overall championship of the 4th edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG 2023) held in the North East region from 17th -29th February 2024. Chandigarh University topped the medal tally of KIUG 2023 with a total of 71 medals (32 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze).
- Lovely Professional University (Punjab) with 42 medals (20 gold, 14 silver, and 8 bronze), and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (Punjab) with 51 medals (12 gold, 20 silver, and 19 bronze) were ranked in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
- The KIUG 2023 was held from 17th to 29th February 2024, in 07 States of North East namely, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Inauguration of Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2023:
On 19th February 2024, Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2023 was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, in the presence of Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MoYAS) and Assam Chief Minister(CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma at Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati, Assam.
About Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2023:
i.Khelo India University Games (KIUG) is a national-level multi-sport event held in India for athletes from universities across India.
- The event is organised as a part of the Khelo India movement.
ii.KIUG 2023 witnessed the participation of 4,500 athletes from around 200 Indian universities, who competed for 770 medals (240 gold, 240 silver, and 290 bronze) across 20 sports.
Mascot: The Mascot of the KIUG 2023 is ‘Ashtalakshmi’, a butterfly.
i.Ashtalakshmi is a symbol of grace and symbolism which represents Northeast India’s vast biodiversity and natural magnificence.
ii.The wings of the mascot feature the cultural motifs and colours in each scale, and depicts the Northeast region’s diverse beauty.
Venues:
i.This was the first time that the KIUG was held in northeast India.
ii.Assam hosted the majority of the events while weightlifting was held in Arunachal Pradesh, archery in Tripura, men’s football in Mizoram, men’s boxing in Sikkim, wrestling in Nagaland and yogasana events in Tripura.
Top medal winners:
i.Swimmer Pratyasa Ray of Odisha’s Utkal University, who won 6 medals (four gold, one silver, and one bronze) was the most successful female athlete at KIUG 2023.
ii.Swimmer Xavier Michael Dsouza of Karnataka’s Jain University, who won four gold medals was the most successful male athlete at KIUG 2023.
Key Points:
i.The win for Chandigarh University in KIUG 2023 marks their first-ever KIUG title, while Panjab University (KIUG 2020 & 2022) and Jain University (KIUG 2021) are the previous edition winners.
ii.Chandigarh University has been on the rise since finishing 34th in the first edition in Odisha. They finished 20th in the second edition and 11th in the third edition in UP.

i.The 6th edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2023 hosted by Tamil Nadu was held from 19th to 31st January 2024. Maharashtra topped the medal tally of KIYG 2023 with 158 medals (57 gold, 48 silver, 53 bronze) and won the overall championship trophy.
