On June 1, 2020, P Namgyal, former Union Minister and three-time Congress MP (Member of Parliament) from Ladakh, passed away at the age of 83 in the Union Territory of Ladakh. He was born on December 17, 1937 in Nubra, Ladakh.
About Namgyal:
i.He was also an agriculturist, & a social worker, besides having interests in sports and music as well. He was widely respected among Buddhists in Ladakh. He also served as an Agricultural Research Officer.
ii.In 1960-70, Namgyal served as the member of the Central Advisory Board for Education. In 1986-88 he was deeply involved in getting Scheduled Tribe status for Ladakhis & Ladakh Autonomous Hill Council.
Political career:
i.Namgyal served the Pradesh Congress Committee in the former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) state as Secretary General and Vice President (VP).
ii.He remained as a member of the J&K Legislative Council from 1960-73 and then from 1974-80, until he got elected to seventh Lok Sabha.
iii.Four years later in 1984, Namgyal was re-elected to Lok Sabha and served as the Central Government Union Deputy Minister and also Union Minister of State of Chemical and Petrochemical and Parliamentary affairs, between 1988-89.
iv.He was elected to the Lok Sabha third time in 1996.
