Japan Open 2023: Viktor Axelsen and An Se Young Wins Men’s & Women’s Singles Title

Axelsen and An emerge Japan Open badminton winners

Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen and South Korea’s An Se Young won the men’s singles and Women’s singles titles respectively of Daihatsu Japan Open 2023 Badminton Championships.

  • The 40th edition of Daihatsu Japan Open 2023 Badminton Championships held from 25th-30th July 2023 at Yoyogi National Stadium First Gymnasium, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.
  • India’s Lakshya Sen was defeated by Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the semifinals of men’s singles.

Highlights:

i.Men’s Singles : Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen(World rank 1) won the men’s singles title defeating  Jonatan Christie of  Indonesia in the finals.

  • This marks his third Badminton World Federation (BWF) title in 2023 including Malaysia open, Indonesia open. He also won the gold medal in European Games 2023.
  • This also marks his second title in the Japan open, previously he won the Japan open 2017.

ii.Women’s singles: An Se Young of South Korea became ranked 1 in the world by winning the women’s singles title against He Bing Jiao of China in the finals.

  • This marks her seventh title of 2023 including the Korea open,Singapore open, Thailand open,  All England open, Indonesia Masters, India open.
  • This also marks her 11th women’s singles finals out of 12 tournaments in 2023.

iii.Men’s Doubles: Lee Yang and Wang Chi Lin of Chinese Taipei(Taiwan) won the men’s doubles title by defeating Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi.

  • This marks their first title won after the gold medal 2020Tokyo olympics and also the first Chinese Taipei pair won the men’s doubles in Japan open.

iv.Women’s Doubles: Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee yong of South Korea won the women’s doubles title by defeating China’s Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan.

  • This marks their second Japan open including Japan open 2019.

v.Mixed doubles:  Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino won the mixed doubles finals against Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.

  • This marks the first Japanese mixed doubles pair to win the Japan Open.

i.The BWF Super 750 event Japan Open 2023 was the eighteenth tournament of the 2023 BWF World Tour.

  • Prize Money – USD 850,000

ii.The points earned by players will be counted for the Paris Olympic 2024 qualification.

iii.It was organised by Japan’s official Nippon Badminton Association (NBA) in association with Badminton World Federation (BWF).
