January 12 is being observed as National Youth Day across India (since 1985) to commemorate the birth anniversary of the true spiritual monk Swami Vivekananda.

Year 2015 marks the 152nd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. He was born on 1863 at Calcutta as Narendra Nath Dutta. His meeting with Swami Ramakrishna changed his life and often called as turning point in his life. Swami Vivekananda was the founder of Ramakrishna Mission.

Swami Vivekananda’s speech at Parliament of the World’s Religions (11th September 1893) about Hinduism made him famous across the world. The US newspapers called him “Cyclonic Monk from India“. He began his speech with “Sisters and Brothers of America” and he received two minutes standing ovation from the crowd of more than seven thousand.

Swami Vivekananda’s Famous Quotes

  • Arise. Awake. Stop not till the goal is reached.
  • Service to poor is service to god.
  • Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.
