Jal Jeevan Mission: Haryana and J&K to provide tap water to every household by Dec 2022

Haryana to provide tap water connection newOn May 13, 2020,The Union Territory (UT) Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and the state Government of Haryana have planned to provide tap connection to supply water to all rural families by December 2022 under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

Key Points:

i.The respective officials presented their work plan related to the supply of water to each family under the Mission to the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

  • Rs 290 Crores will be provided by Central government by Haryana under JJM for this financial year, which will be supplemented by the same amount of State’s matching share.

ii.Current household tap connection:

  • J&K: According to the data, there are 18.17 lakh houses in UT, out of which 5.75 lakh houses have already been given Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC). Out of the remaining houses, 1.76 lakh houses are planned to provide tap connection by the year 2020-21. It is planning 100 % coverage of 5000 villages in 3 districts- Srinagar, Reasi, and Gandharbal till December 2022, while the national target has been set for the year 2024-25.

For this financial year (FY 2020-12), the J&K is likely to get Rs 680 crore as part of the centre’s JJM Mission.

  • Haryana: The state government has provided 1.05 lakh tap connections in the year 2019-20. There are 28.94 houses in Haryana. Of these, 18.83 lakh already have tap water connection and 10.11 lakh houses are to be covered.

iii.Benefit: During this difficult time of the coronavirus(Covid-19) epidemic, efforts to provide domestic tap connections in rural areas will make life easier. Especially women and girls will get rid of hard work and will help them to live a safe and dignified life.

About Jal Jeevan Mission:
It is a central government initiative with the aim to provide drinking water to every rural household. Works under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the government implemented the mission on a priority basis.
The central government has advised the state & UT governments to adopt this JJM mission to achieve 2 objectives. This includes providing tap water connections to every rural family and providing job opportunities to local people and migrants.
