Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wins the election by defeating his main rival, Isaac Herzog, and assured himself a fourth term. Netanyahu’s Likud Party had won 30 seats to the Zionist Union’s 24.
In his campaign, Netanyahu mainly focused issues related to security. His opponents focosed on issues such as high cost of living and also accused the Netanyahu for being out of touch with public. Netanyahu’s return to power for a fourth term may spells trouble for Middle-East peace efforts and could further escalate tensions with the United States.
Netanyahu opposes the creation of a Palestinian state, which is a key policy goal of the White House and the international community. He also committed to expand the border in Jewish areas of east Jerusalem, which is claimed by the Palestinians as their capital.
Netanyahu is now trying to find coalition partners with whom to build a new government.
