International Transgender Day of Visibility - March 31 2022

International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is annually observed across the globe on 31st March to celebrate the accomplishments and perseverance of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. The day also aims to create awareness about the need to achieve equity and justice for trans individuals. 

  • The day is centred around celebrating and uplifting the transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming communities. 

Flag: Transgender flag is a light blue, pink and white pentacolour pride flag representing the transgender community. 

Background:

i.Rachel Crandall, an American transgender activist founded the International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) in 2009 to highlight the discrimination faced by the community.

ii.The day was first observed on 31st March 2009. 

  • Rachel Crandall is a psychotherapist and the executive director of Transgender Michigan, an organisation based in the United States(US).

Transgender: 

Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression of being male, female, or something else, that differs from the sex that they were assigned at birth.

Other Related observance:

Transgender Day of Remembrance(TDOR) is annually observed on 20th November to honour the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

Key Points:

i.In 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has removed the “Gender identity disorder’ from its global manual of diagnoses. 

ii.WHO released the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) that reclassifies “gender identity disorder” as “gender incongruence”, which is now featured under the sexual health chapter instead of the mental disorders chapter.
