Every year 29th May is being celebrated on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
2016 Theme: “Honouring Our Heroes”
First UN Peacekeeping mission founded: 1948
Purpose:
Honour the remembrance of the UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace as a result of acts of violence, accidents and disease
Pay tribute to all who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage
UN offices, Member States and Non-governmental organizations are celebrating the day to pay tribute to people who lost their lives
Status of Peacekeepers:
- Selfless peacekeepers came from 46 countries
- Majorily from the ranks of military, police, international civil servants, UN Volunteers and national staff
- Having different backgrounds but all shared equal contribution to keep the peace
Qualities of Peacekeeper: Pride, Distinction and Courage
UN peacekeeping operations mark the Day by holding events:
- Sporting events
- School and orphanage visits
- Art and essay competitions
- Photo exhibits
- Neighbourhood clean ups and tree plantings
- Concerts, conferences and workshops
The UN General Assembly designated Peacekeepers Day in 2002
