The United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is annually observed across the globe on 6th April to create a platform to recognise the role of sports and physical activities in communities and lives of the people across the globe.

6th April 2022 marks the observance of the 9th edition of IDSDP.

The theme of IDSDP 2022 is “Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport”.

  • The theme primarily focuses on climate change and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Background:

i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/67/296 on 23rd August 2013 and proclaimed the 6th April of every year as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP).

Why April 6?

  • The Athens 1896 Olympic Games, held in Athens, Greece, took place from 6th to 15th April 1896.

Significance of IDSDP:

i.The vast reach of sports and its unparalleled popularity and foundation of positive values is positioned to contribute toward the UN’s objectives for development and peace.

ii.The day also signifies the recognition by the UN of the positive influence of sports on the advancement of human rights and social and economic development.

Sports & Climate Change:

Sports is in a unique position to display leadership, take responsibility for its carbon footprint, engage in a climate-neutral journey, incentivize action beyond the sporting sector, and play a major role in amplifying awareness among its billions of spectators, and facilitators and participants at all levels.
