The United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is annually observed across the globe on 29th November to mark the day when the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution in 1947 for partitioning Palestine into an Arab State and a Jewish State.
The day encourages the member states of the UN to support and promote the observance of the Day of Solidarity.
The first International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People was observed on 29th November 1978.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution 32/40 B in 1977 and proclaimed the 29th November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
ii.The day was chosen to mark the UNGA’s 1947 resolution A/RES/181(II) on the partition of Palestine.
Events:
i.A special meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States of America(USA) will be organised as a part of the celebration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2020 on 1st December 2020.
ii.The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, UNGA’s body to promote the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and independence, will hold the meeting of the high level officials of the Member states, Secretary general, intergovernmental organizations and representatives of civil society.
Note :
At UN Headquarters at New York, USA and the UN Offices in Vienna, Geneva and Nairobi, The UN will observe the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People with events on 1st December 2020 and elsewhere are organised on or around 29 November.
Virtual Exhibition:
i.The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will launch the virtual exhibit, focused on the wall built in the occupied Palestinian territory.
ii.The wall has been ruled as illegal by the International Court of Justice in its Advisory Opinion of 9 July 2004.
iii.The UN events will be broadcasted over the UN Web TV and the exhibit will be available on the Official website of the UN.
