United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism is annually oserved on 21st August to commemorate and pay tribute to the victims and survivors of Terrorism acoss the globe. The first International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was observed on 21st August 2018.
21st August 2020 marks the 3rd commemoration of the nternational Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.
The event of 2020 are organized by UN Counter Terrorism Centre(UNCCT) in collaboration with the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism.
Note:
Owing to the focus of the international community on the response to COVID-19, many memorials and commemorations of 2020 are cancelled.
Background:
i.The resolution A/ HRC/RES/17/8 adopted by the Human Right Council on 16th June 2011, recommended the General Assemby to proclaim the 19th August as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.
ii.To honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the victims of terrorist attacks, the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/72/165 on 19th December 2017, proclaiming 21st August of Every year as the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.
Events 2020:
i.United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres will participate in the online high-level event entitled “Not Forgotten: Stories of Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism”.
ii.A short film with testimonies of victims and survivors of terrorism demonstrating their individual journey and experience will be launched.
iii.An interactive discussion on how the pandemic has affected the ability to honour and commemorate victims and survivors of terrorism will be conducted with a panel of victims, victims’ associations, and experts.
