International Day of Radiology (IDoR) or World Radiography Day is annually observed across the globe on 8 November to raise awareness about the contribution of radiology towards safe patient care, and to improve public understanding of the vital role radiologists and radiographers play in the healthcare continuum.
- IDoR was created to mark the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a German physicist & the winner of the 1st Nobel Prize in Physics (1901), in 1895.
8 November 2023 marks the observance of the 12th International Day of Radiology(IDoR).
Significance:
i.According to the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the IDOR 2023 took place under a persistent theme, “Radiologists and Radiographers Supporting Patients”.
ii.According to the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT), the 2023 theme of IDoR is, “Celebrating Patient Safety“.
Note: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was awarded the Nobel Prize in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays known as Röntgen Rays or X-Rays.
Background:
i.The IDoR was established in 2011 as a follow-up to the European Day of Radiology (EDoR).
ii.On February 10, 2011, the 1st and only EDoR was hosted by the European Society of Radiology (ESR) to honour the death anniversary of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (February 10, 1923).
iii.Following the success of the EDoR, the ESR collaborated with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) to create the IDoR, which replaced the EoDR.
- Later, the observance was moved from Röntgen’s death anniversary to that of his discovery of X-rays.
iv.On November 28, 2011, during the annual RSNA meeting in Chicago, the United States of America (USA) November 8 was officially confirmed as the IDoR by ESR, ACR, and RSNA.
v.The IDoR was 1st observed in 2012, as a joint initiative of ESR, the RSNA, and the ACR.
Radiology and its types:
i.Radiology is a branch of medicine that uses imaging technology to diagnose and treat diseases affecting human and animal bodies.
ii.Radiology may be divided into 2 different areas, diagnostic radiology(Computed Tomography (CT); Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)) and interventional radiology (Angiography).
Benefits:
i.When compared to other surgical or medication-based processes, it is a less expensive method of treatment.
ii.It can easily treat blood vessel problems such as narrowing of arteries, hemorrhage, blood clots, and vein obstruction.
iii.It is used in assessing diseases like breast cancer (mammography), with early detection lowering death rates.
