International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 2022

The United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is annually observed across the globe on 24th April to create awareness about preserving the values of multilateralism and international cooperation, which supports the UN Charter and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 

  • Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace are fundamental to promoting and supporting the three pillars of the UN – Peace and Security, Development and Human Rights.

Background:

The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/73/127 on 12th December 2018 and proclaimed the 24th April of every year as the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace with effect from the 73rd session of the General Assembly.

  • The first-ever International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was observed on 24th April 2019.

Efforts of UN:

i.During the General Debate in September 2018, most of the world leaders reaffirmed the commitment to multilateralism and international peace and security. 

ii.This commitment was also reinforced in the discussion during the High-level Dialogue on Renewing the Commitment to Multilateralism on 31st October 2018.
