International Day of Action for Women’s Health or International Women’s Health Day is annually observed across the globe on 28th May to highlight the demands for the fulfilment of women’s rights to health.
The day aims to create awareness about the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) movement across the globe.
The theme of the 2022 International Day of Action for Women’s Health is “#ResistAndPersist amid crises and global uncertainty”
- The 2022 observance calls everyone to #ResistAndPersist amid crises and global uncertainty and to continue to assert that #WomensHealthMatters and #SRHRisEssential.
Background:
i.On May 28 1987, during the IV International Women’s Health Meeting in Costa Rica, the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) proposed to celebrate May 28 annually as the International Day of Action for Women’s Health.
- Since then, the women ’s health advocates and their communities across the globe have been commemorating 28th May as the International Day of Action for Women’s Health.
ii.Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), the global network has been spearheading the May 28 campaign across the globe.
Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) includes rights to,
- Receive information on sexuality
- Sexuality education
- Choose their partner
- Take the decision to be sexually active or not
- Decide when to have children
- Use modern contraceptive methods
- Access to maternity care
- Safe abortion and post-abortion care
