Event: The 2025 commemoration event was held on October 17, 2025, at the Economic and Social Council Chamber(ECOSOC Chamber) in New York, United States of America (USA) followed by a special observance at the Commemorative Stone in Honor of Victims of Extreme Poverty in the United Nations Garden, North Lawn, USA.

Organiser: The event was organized by the UN in collaboration with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) By UNDP:

2025 Report: The 2025 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report for the first time combines data on climate hazards and multidimensional poverty to evaluate how vulnerable poor populations are to environmental shocks.

MPI Update: The latest Global MPI database includes new data from 13 countries, covering 109 countries and 1,359 subnational regions across 101 countries.

Poverty Overview: Around 690 million people live in extreme income poverty (below USD 2.15 per day), while nearly 1.1 billion people face acute multidimensional poverty, experiencing deprivations in health, education, and living standards.

Climate Vulnerability: About 80% of the world’s multidimensionally poor population (887 million) reside in regions exposed to at least one climate hazard, including extreme heat, droughts, floods, or air pollution.

Concentration of Poverty: Nearly half of the world’s multidimensionally poor (518 million people) reside in six middle-income countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Tanzania.
