The United Nations(UN)’s International Day for Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is annually observed across the globe on 24th April to promote the 3 pillars of the United Nations – Peace and Security; Development; and Human Rights.
Aim:
To spread the advantages of Multilateralism and diplomacy for peace through education and public awareness activities.
Background:
The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/73/127 on 12th December 2018 and proclaimed the 24th April of every year as the International Day for Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
The first International Day for Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was observed on 24th April 2019.
Global Peace Index:
i.The Global Peace Index is an annual report of the Institute for Economics and Peace(IEP), which measures the peacefulness of the countries.
ii.The Global Peace Index ranks the 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.
- According to the 2020 Global Peace Index, Iceland topped the list with a score of 1.078 and Afganistan ranked 163 with a score of 3.644.
- India secured the 139th rank with a score of 2.628.
