The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is observed on 4th April. It was decided on 8th December 2005 at the United Nations General Assembly that each year April 4th will be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
The UN is working towards raising awareness about landmines and other threats and progressing towards their eradication. On this daythere is a lot of awareness raising events which include photo exhibits, press conferences, film screening, etc. The theme for this Year was declared as “More than Mines” by the UN, which takes into consideration the various threats that are caused by other explosives, unexploded bombs, grenades, ammunition that are a danger to the civilians.
The Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) which are more powerful and can destroy, kill and block the development of a country are also considered this year. With all these changes taking place and since unexploded Mines only play a small part of the threat that civilians face in the current days, this theme has been decided by the UN.
