Victims of Acts of Violence BasedThe United Nations(UN)’s International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief is annually observed across the globe on 22nd August to commemorate the victims of the violence based on religion or belief. The day also recognises the importance of supporting the victims and members of their families and providing assistance following applicable law.

  • 22nd August 2021 marked the observance of 3rd International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief

Background:

i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) has adopted the resolution A/RES/73/296 on 28 May 2019 and proclaimed the 22nd August of every year as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.

ii.The first-ever International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief was observed on 22nd August 2019. 

Other related observances:

i.The World Interfaith Harmony Week(WIHW), is annually observed across the globe in the first week of February to promote cultural peace and non-violence.

ii.The International Day of Human Fraternity is also observed across the globe on 4th February. The first International Day of Human Fraternity was observed in 2021.

Acts of Violence based on religion or belief:

i.According to the UN, the act of intolerance and violence based on religion or belief against a person belonging to religious communities or minorities across the globe is increasing.

ii.To promote and protect the human rights of the people belonging to religious minorities and their right to exercise their religion or belief are the primary responsibilities of the member states of the UN.
