International Children's Book Day - April 2 2022

International Children’s Book Day(ICBD) is annually observed across the globe on the 2nd April to inspire children toward reading and to call attention to books.

The day also marks the birth anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish author who is well known for his literary fairy tales.

  • The theme of 2022 ICBD is “Stories are wings that help you soar every day”. 
  • The author of the ICBD 2022 message was Richard Van Camp and the 2022 poster was designed by Julie Flett. 
  • IBBY Canada is the international sponsor of the celebration of the 2022 ICBD. 

Note: 

i.The day is annually celebrated by the different national sections of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). 

ii.Every year the sponsor decides upon the theme and invites prominent authors from the host country to write a message to children around the world. 

Hans Christian Andersen Award:

i.The Hans Christian Andersen Award, annually presented by IBBY, is the highest international distinction given to authors and illustrators of children’s books. 

ii.The award recognizes lifelong achievement and is given to an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children’s literature. 

iii.The author’s award has been given since 1956 and the illustrator’s award is given since 1966. 

Winners of 2022 Hans Christian Andersen Award:

  • 2022 author award: Marie-Aude Murail, author from France. 
  • 2022 Illustrator award: Suzy Lee, Illustrator from the Republic of Korea. 

About Hans Christian Andersen:

i.Hans Christian Andersen is a renowned danish author of plays, novels, poems, travel books. 

ii.His best known children stories includes, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “The Little Mermaid”, “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”, “The Red Shoes”, “The Little Match Girl”, and ‘The Ugly Duckling”.
