India celebrated the 73rd Republic Day on 26th January 2022. The celebration of Republic Day 2022 is observed during the 75th year of Independence, celebrated as Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
On the occasion of Republic Day, President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, the first citizen of India unfurls the National flag on Rajpath before presiding over a parade that showcases the military strength and cultural diversity.
Republic Day event and parade:
i.The events of the 73rd Republic Day and the parade was held at the Rajpath in New Delhi.
ii.The tableaux of 12 States (Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand) were selected.
iii.The parade also featured the tableaux of 9 ministries and departments of the Central government.
iv.The parade organized by the Ministry of Defence was led by Lieutenant General Vijay Kumar Mishra.
v.The Ministry of Defence has also organised the ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony at Vijay Chowk, New Delhi, Delhi.
Note:
The 2022 parade at Rajpath started at 10.30 AM on 26th January 2022, instead of the usual 10.00 AM to provide better visibility of the Parade and Flypast.
Highlights:
i.Squadron Leader Suraj Nair has been honoured with the Vayu Sena Medal to recognise his courage and disregard to personal safety in a hostile combat zone. He took part in the Casualty Evacuation Mission to the ambush site in Naxalite infested area.
ii.President also awarded the President’s Tatrakshak Medals (PTM)/ Tatrakshak Medal (TM) to the Indian Coast Guard Personnel for their act of “conspicuous gallantry, exceptional devotion to duty” and distinguished or meritorious service.

- The award is annually presented to the Indian Indian Coast Guard on the occasion of Republic Day and Independence Day since January 1990.
iii.The President has also approved awards for 384 Gallantry and other Defence decorations to Armed Forces personnel and others.
The awards include 12 Shaurya Chakras, 29 Param Vishisht Seva Medals(PVSM), 4 UttamYudh Seva Medals, 53 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, 13 Yudh Seva Medals, 3 Bar to Vishisht Seva Medals, 122 Vishisht Seva Medals, 3 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 81 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 2 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry), 40 Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty), 8 Nao Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty), and 14 Vayu Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty).
Note:
Olympic Gold Medalist, Neeraj Chopra, a Subedar in the Indian Army has been honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal.
