- Passed civil services examination and joined as Indian Foreign Service in 1975 and served in Foreign Service for 15 years including services in Malaysia, Spain and Pakistan
- From 1990 to 2015, he worked in a series of roles at the Commonwealth Secretariat including Head of the Secretary General’s Office and Political Director.
