Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag and former Indian women’s cricket team captain Diana Fram Edulji , along with Sri Lanka’s Aravinda de Silva, were inducted into the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Hall of Fame for the year 2023.
- Diana Fram Edulji is the first Indian woman cricketer inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
- The three legends are to be presented with a commemorative ICC Cricket Hall of Fame cap during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai (Maharashtra) on 15th November 2023.
About Virender Sehwag:
i.Test Career:He played 104 Test matches and scored 8,586 runs, along with 40 wickets.
- He has the record for scoring the fifth-most number of Test centuries by an Indian men’s player with 23 centuries.
- He was also the highest Indian run-scorer in a single inning of a test match with 319 runs against South Africa in 2008 in Chennai (Tamil Nadu).
ii.ODI Career:He played 251 One Day International (ODI) matches and scored 8,273 runs for India; his 219 runs against the West Indies in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) in 2011 remain the third-highest score achieved by any men’s player at ODI matches.
- Sehwag was also part of the Indian team that won the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2011 and also won the inaugural Twenty 20 International (T20I) World Cup 2007 in South Africa.
iii.T20I Career:He played 19 T20I matches and scored 394 runs.
iv.Awards:He was the recipient of the Padma Shri (2010) in the sports category and the Arjuna Award (2002).
About Diana Edulji:
i.The left-arm orthodox spinner Diana Fram Edulji played for the Indian Women’s cricket team for 54 matches between 1976 and 1993.
- She played 20 Test matches, scored 404 runs, and took 63 wickets.
- In 34 ODI matches, she scored 211 runs and bagged 46 wickets.
- She was also a part of the Indian women’s cricket team’s first official Test match against the West Indies in 1976.
ii.Awards:She was the recipient of the PadmaShri(2002) in the sports category and Arjuna Award(1983)
About Aravinda de Silva:
i.Sri Lankan right-hand batsman Pinnaduwage Aravinda de Silva was part of the Sri Lankan cricket team that won their first ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup in 1996, which was hosted by India and Pakistan.
ii.He played 93 Test matches and scored 6,361 runs with 20 Test centuries, the third most centuries by any Sri Lanka men’s player.
iii.He played 308 ODI matches and scored 9,284 runs including 11 centuries.
About ICC Cricket Hall of Fame:
i.As a part of the ICC’s centennial year celebrations, the ICC and the Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA) jointly established the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on January 2, 2009.
ii.Each year, the cricketers for the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame were selected by the living members of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
