According to the World Intellectual Property Indicators 2024, the annual report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), India has made a significant growth in terms of the global intellectual property (IP) and has secured a position in the top 10 countries for all three major IP rights – patents, trademarks, and industrial designs.
- The report published by WIPO assesses the global trends in IP filings and shows significant growth in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications across top economies.
Key Highlights:
i.India recorded a considerable growth of 15.7% in 2023 in patent applications, the fastest among the top 20 countries and is the 5th consecutive year of double-digit increases in patent filings.
- India has gained 6th rank globally with 64,480 patent applications, domestic applicants comprising over half (55.2%) of these applications which is the first time for a country.
- Furthermore, India granted 149.4% more patents in 2023 compared to 2022 showing rapid expansion of its IP ecosystem.
ii.In India’s industrial design sector, applications also rose by 36.4% reflecting the increasing emphasis on product design, manufacturing, and the creative industries in India.
- Textiles and Accessories, Tools and Machines, and Health and Cosmetics were amongst the leading sectors for industrial design applications which together accounted for nearly half of the design filings.
iii.The WIPO report also showed a remarkable progress in India’s performance in trademark filings, with a 6.1% increase in 2023.
- India ranked 4th globally for trademarks and nearly 90% of these filings originated from domestic businesses.
- Most of the trademark filings came from Health (21.9%), Agriculture (15.3%) and Clothing (12.8%) sectors.
- India’s trademark office now has the 2nd largest number of active trademark registrations worldwide, with over 3.2 million trademarks in force.
iv. Between 2018 and 2023, patent and industrial design applications more than doubled, while trademark filings increased by 60% while the country’s patent-to-GDP ratio rose sharply from 144 in 2013 to 381 in 2023.
v.A record of 3.55 million patent applications were filed globally in 2023 which was a 2.7% increase from 2022.
- The rise in patent filings was mainly due to Asian economies, particularly China, United States of America (USA), Japan, South Korea and India.
- The increase in resident filings, especially in India, shows increasing local innovation, with an aim to strengthen their domestic IP ecosystems.
