The Transparency International released its 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) in which India ranked 93 out of 180 countries with an overall score of 39. India’s score was 40 in 2022 with 85th rank.
- The CPI 2023 was topped by Denmark with a score of 90. It is followed by Finland with a score of 87 and New Zealand with a score of 85.
- India’s score and Rank is shared by Kazakhstan, Lesotho, and Maldives.

Assessment:
The index ranks 180 countries and territories based on perceived public sector corruption, using a 0 to 100 scale, where a score of 0 signifies high corruption and 100 denotes a clean environment.
Key Points:
i.71% of Asia-Pacific countries has CPI scores below the regional and global averages of 45 and 43, respectively.
- It should be noted that the global average for CPI remained stagnant at 43 for the twelfth consecutive year.
ii.Weak scores indicate elected officials’ failure in anti-corruption efforts, crackdowns on civil society, and attacks on press freedoms.
iii.Countries at the bottom of the index are Somalia (11), Venezuela (13)(Rank 177), Syria (13)(Rank 177) and South Sudan (13)(Rank 177).
- These countries are affected by protracted crises, primarily armed conflicts.
iv.Globally, most countries showing no progress or experiencing declines in the last decade i.e. remained stagnant.
v.India’s neighbors Afghanistan and Myanmar scored 20, China scored 42, Japan scored 73, Bangladesh scored 24, Pakistan scored 29, and Sri Lanka scored 34.
vi.Eight countries that witnessed improvements in their Corruption Perceptions Index scores are Ireland (77), South Korea (63), Armenia (47), Vietnam (41), the Maldives (39), Moldova (42), Angola (33), and Uzbekistan (33).
