India Ranks 49th in the International Institute for Management Development (IMD)’s 7th edition of World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR) 2023. The report measures the capacity and readiness of 64 economies based on three broad categories which are: Knowledge, Technology and Future readiness.
Key Findings of the Report:
- The U.S.A reclaimed its top position (Rank 1) which performs well in all three categories – Knowledge, Technology and Future Readiness.
- IMD’s WDCR report highlights the essential elements that contribute nation’s digital prowess which can play the significant role in reshaping society.
- Switzerland retained the top position in the knowledge factor and maintained its overall position to 5th best performing country in the ranking.
- Denmark, ranked 1 in 2022 has been slipped to 4th place mainly due to decline in the future readiness and technology factors.

India’s Performance in 2023:
According to IMD’s Report, India has been ranked 49th among 64 countries. The report mentioned that India made a little progress in the field of cyber security knowledge (Rank 45) but perform low in the fields of technology and future readiness.
Note: In the previous edition of WDCR 2022 report, India was ranked at 44th position.
- India slipped a rank below in Asia-Pacific Region, stays 12th position among 14 countries. Earlier, India ranked 11 for 4 consecutive years (2019-22) in the Asia-Pacific region.
- India secured the 50th spot in technology domain as it faces challenges in enforcing contracts, wireless broadband and internet users.
- India ranks 51 in future readiness parameters, The report highlights the key areas where India lacks: tablet possession, internet retailing and e-governance
- Among 27 nations with population exceeding 20 million, India rank has dropped to 18th position from 16th as compare to last year.
- India improved on parameters like talent training and education. Graduates in science and Research &Development (R&D) emerged as the top strength of India.
