India Ranked 46th in GII 2021 by WIPO; Switzerland Tops

India scores 46th rank in the Global Innovation Index 2021India’s rank in Global Innovation Index (GII) 2021 by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) improved by two spots to 46th from 48th in GII 2020.

  • India entered into the group of top 50 countries in GII for the 1st time.
  • The NITI(National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog, along with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), virtually hosted the India Launch of the GII 2021 and the Global Innovation Conclave in September 2021.

Key Points:

i.India, Kenya, Republic of Moldova and VietNam hold the record of being Innovation achievers for 11 consecutive years (2011-2021).  India has shifted from 81st position in 2015 to 46 in 2021.

ii.India is at the top of the Central and Southern Asia region.

iii.India leads the world in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) services exports indicator (1st) and held 12th position under indicators such as Domestic industry diversification and Graduates in science and engineering.

  • India was portrayed as successful in developing sophisticated services that are technologically dynamic and can be traded internationally.

iv.The GII report is published by WIPO in partnership with the Portulans Institute, CII, Brazilian National Confederation of Industry, Ecopetrol Group (Colombia), and the Turkish Exporters Assembly.

v.A total of 132 countries were analysed under the GII by WIPO to present the latest global innovation through ranking.

Participants: K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to Government of India, Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog, Daren Tang, Director General, WIPO, have participated in the launch.
