The 2nd Edition of the ‘COVID-19 Innovation report 2021’ released by Startup Blink in association with Health Innovation Exchange & UN AIDS (United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS) has ranked India 32nd (score 0.396) in the global coronavirus innovation rankings for countries. The US has topped the rankings, followed by Israel & Canada.
i.The report ranks the 40 countries and 100 cities in the world based on Innovation solutions developed to combat the pandemic.
ii.In the Cities Rankings, San Francisco Bay (US), New York (US) & Moscow (Russia) were ranked as the Top 3 cities.
- India has 2 cities – Bengaluru, Karnataka (49th Rank), New Delhi (55th) in the top 100 rankings.
iii.The 1st Edition of the report was released in June 2020, in which India was ranked 26th.

Categories of Innovation
The innovations are segmented into different categories – Prevention, Diagnostics, Treatment, Grants and support initiatives, information, life and business adaptation.Notable Innovations from India
i.The number of innovations from India is lower compared to the US, UK and China.
- Some notable innovations from India are OneBreath for treatment (ventilator and medical devices), CareMother for diagnostics (telehealth diagnostics) & Serum Institute of India (SII) for prevention (vaccines).
- India’s strongest categories are Prevention, Diagnostics, and Treatment, with a total of 15 mapped innovations.
Other Countries
i.Meanwhile, China has slipped to 15th Rank (from 13th Rank in 2020). It has 24 innovations (Sinopharm Vaccine for prevention). 4 of its cities were featured in the Top 100.
ii.US which topped the rankings has 405 mapped COVID-19 related innovations. Most innovations are John Hopkins University for Information (databases), Moderna and Johnson and Johnson for Prevention (vaccines).
iii.In the Asian-Pacific category, Singapore came first, followed by South Korea & Taiwan.
