India ranked 117th among 129 nationsAccording to the Inclusiveness Index published by the Othering and Belonging Institute (OBI) at California University, United States of America(USA), India was ranked 117th out of 129 countries with an overall score of 49.24.

  • India was ranked 129th  in religion inclusiveness, 121st in gender, 108th in disability, 87th in race, 40th in the general population, and 39th in LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or questioning, Intersex, Asexual).
  • The index was topped by New Zealand for the second consecutive year with an overall score of 82.08.
  • It is followed by 2nd place at Portugal (77.6), and the Netherlands (76.98) in the 3rd place.

What is in the Index?

The index examines inclusivity in terms of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and the general population using several measures.

  • These measures include out-group violence, political representation, income inequality, anti-discrimination laws, rate of incarceration, and immigration/ asylum policies

Key Points:

i.India ranked lower than smaller countries such as Bangladesh (106) and Israel (115) in the inclusiveness index.

  • Larger countries like Russia also secured a lower rank at 120th.

ii.Iran was placed at the bottom of the global list with a score 36.59.

About OBI Inclusiveness index:

Since 2016, OBI has annually released an inclusiveness index, ranking countries based on various indicators. This is for the first time, OBI introduced a new indicator assessing countries’ responses to the climate crisis, specifically evaluating changes in greenhouse gas emissions.
