India Men’s Cricket Team Defeats England to Win Anthony de Mello Trophy 2024The Indian men’s test cricket team led by Rohit Sharma won the Anthony de Mello Trophy 2024 by defeating England (captained by Ben Stokes) in the five-match test series for 4-1 held from 25th January to 9th March 2024 in five venues across India.

Highlights:

i.England won the 1st Test match by 28 runs held at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, Telangana.

ii.India defeated England by 106 runs in the 2nd Test match held at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

iii.India won the 3rd test match by 434 runs held at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot, Gujarat.

iv.India won the 4th Test Match by 5 wickets held at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, Jharkhand.

v.India won the 5th test match against England by an innings and 64 runs held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

Awards/Honours:

Player of the Series: Yashasvi Jaiswal (India)

Most runs in the series: Yashasvi Jaiswal (India) – 712 Runs

Most wickets in the series: Ravichandran Ashwin (India) – 26 Wickets

Debutants:

The five Indian players who made their debut in the series include Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, Rajat Patidar, and Devdutt Padikkal.

Records:

i.The Anthony de Mello Trophy 2024 series is the first-ever Test series where more than 100 sixes were hit.

  • In total, 102 sixes were hit in the series, including India’s 72 and England’s 30.
  • Previously, the Ashes Series 2023 was the series that had the most number of sixes with 74.

Ravichandran Ashwin:

i.Ravichandran Ashwin played his 100th Test for India in the fifth Test against England at Dharamshala, where he also took five wickets in the second innings.

ii.He has become the first-ever bowler in cricket to take a five-wicket haul (fifer) in his debut match and his 100th match.

  • In his debut, he took six wickets in the second innings against the West Indies in 2011.

iii.Ashwin is the ninth bowler and the second Indian(After Anil Kumble –  619) to pick up 500 Test wickets.

iv.Ashwin also became the second-fastest bowler to take 500 wickets in test matches.

  • He took 98 Test matches to pick up 500 wickets in test matches, while Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) took 87 matches.

v.Ashwin overtook Anil Kumble(India) and Kapil Dev(India), and equaled Muttiah Muralitharan for the best performance in their 100th Test match.

  • Ashwin and Muralitharan took nine wickets in their 100th test match (Combined both innings).

Yashasvi Jaiswal:

i.Yashasvi Jaiswal was the top run scorer in the series with 712 runs.

ii.With the 712 runs, he surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for most runs (655 runs) in a Test series against England. Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 774 runs was the highest run against England in a single test series.

iii.Yashasvi Jaiswal has become the second Indian batsman after Sunil Gavaskar to score more than 700 runs in a single Test series.

iv.He also became the second-fastest Indian player to reach 1000 Test runs in 16 innings, only behind Vinod Kambli (14 innings).

  • Jaiswal, with 26 sixes against England, now has the most Test sixes by an Indian batter against a particular opponent.

Other records:

i.Bumrah became the quickest Indian fast bowler to 150 Test wickets (in the second Test match against England), achieving the feat in 34 Test matches.

ii. Indian cricket team registered their record 17th consecutive Test series win on home soil (Since 2012/13).

iii.India became the first team in over 112 years to claim 4-1 series win after losing the opening test. It was first done by Australia against England in 1897/98.

iv.The England cricket team, with 35 Test match defeats, has the highest number of losses against India in Test cricket.

v.Sarfaraz Khan became the fourth Indian batter to score a fifty-plus score in both innings of a Test debut, He scored 62 runs and 68 runs in the two innings of 3rd Test. The first to do it was Dilawar Hussain (India) against England in 1934.

vi. Dhruv Jurel becomes the first Indian wicketkeeper in 22 years to win the Man of the Match award in his debut test match held at Ranchi.

vii. Jonny Bairstow became the 17th player from England to play 100 Test matches when he played at the fifth Test against India.

viii.Indian men’s cricket team achieved its biggest test win (by runs) when they defeated England by 434 runs in the third Test.

James Anderson:

i.England’s James Anderson became the first fast bowler and third bowler to take 700 Test wickets.

  • He achieved this feat when he took the wicket of India’s Kuldeep Yadav on the fifth Test in Dharamshala.
  • Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets) and Australia’s Shane Warne (708 wickets) are the others two bowlers who crossed 700 Test wickets.

ICC Ranking:

i.The Indian men’s cricket team claimed the top spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings after winning the test series against England.

ii.Australia and England are in second and third place, respectively, in the Test rankings.

iii.As of 11th March’24, the Indian men’s cricket team ranked in the top spot in both the ICC men’s One Day International (ODI) team ranking and the ICC men’s Twenty20 International (T20I) team ranking.

About the trophy:

i.The test series between India and England played in India, has been named after Anthony de Mello, Indian cricket administrator and one of the founding members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

ii.The first edition was played in 1951/52 and ended in a draw.
