On 29th June 2024, India men’s national cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Twenty20 (T20) World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa (The Proteas), captained by Aiden Markram, by 7 runs in the finals held in the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
- This marks India’s 2nd T20 World Cup title. India previously won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup held in 2007 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh (MS) Dhoni.
- With this win, India became the 3rd Country to win the title twice after England(2010 & 2022) and West Indies (2012 & 2016).
Note:Â India has set a new record for making the highest runs by any team in the finals of a Men’s T20 World Cup (176/7) breaking Australia’s record of 173/2 against New Zealand in 2021.

Prize Money, Awards and honours:
ICC awarded a prize money of USD 2.45 million(Rs 20.42 crores) to India, the winners of the 2024 T20 Word Cup. This is the highest prize money presented among all the T20 World Cup editions.
- Runner-up South Africa received a prize money of USD 1.28 million.
- ICC announced a record prize purse of USD 11.25 million for the T20 World Cup. The Semi-finalists (Afghanistan and England) received USD 787,500 each.

ii.During the finals, Virat Kohli scored a total of 76 runs in 59 balls. He took 48 balls to score 50 runs, This is his slowest fifty in T20I cricket.
iii.Suryakumar Yadav secured a catch on the boundary to dismiss David Miller in the final over.
BCCI Announced Rs 125 Crore prize for Team India:
Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) announced prize money of Rs 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
- The prize money will be distributed among the 15-member squad, including four reserve players, and 11 support staff led by Head coach Rahul Dravid.
- Each player in the squad is expected to receive at least Rs.5 Crores, while reserve players and support staff members will receive a minimum of Rs.1 Crore each.

Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi took five wickets against Uganda in a T20 World Cup match which was the best number for an Afghan cricketer in the history of the T20 World Cup.
- Farooqi also became the second Afghan bowler, after Mujeeb ur Rahman, to register a fifth in the T20 World Cup who a five-wicket haul against Scotland during the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup.

West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran hit the most sixes totaling to 17 in a T20 World Cup breaking the record of 16 set by his compatriot Chris Gayle.

Australian cricketer Pat Cummins secured two back to back hattricks in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and became the first 1st bowler to claim a 2 back to back hat trick in a row in T20I.
- He registered his first hat trick in the match against Bangladesh in a Super 8 fixture of Group 1 and the 2nd hattrick in the next match against Afghanistan.

After winning the ICC T20 World Cup, Indian Cricketers, Virat Kohli(35 years old), Rohit Sharma (37 years old) & Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from T20 International(T20I) cricket. They will continue to represent India in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test Matches.
About Virat Kohli:
i.He made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in 2010 and played 125 T20I matches in his career, scoring 4188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04.
ii.He is the fastest batter to reach the 3500-run milestone in T20Is, hitting the mark in just 96 innings and the second-highest scorer in the format.
iii.He was also named in the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade from 2011 to 2020.
iv.He captained in 50 matches, emerging victorious in 30 while losing 16.

i.Rohit made his T20I debut in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007 against England.

New Zealand Trent Boult retired from International Cricket
New Zealand’s left-arm fast bowler Trent Bould retired from international cricket after New Zealand’s T20 World Cup campaign ended with a 7-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in Trinidad.

First-timers USA knock out Pakistan, join India in T20 World Cup Super-Eight
For the first time, the USA team cleared the group stage of the T20 World Cup after its match against Ireland was called off. Following this, Babar Azam-led Pakistan were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stage.
- The USA joined India in the Super Eight stage of the T20 showpiece due to their wins over neighbours Canada and heavyweights Pakistan in their first two outings,
