The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy have partnered with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to use CHAFF Technology in the Indian Airforce Aircrafts and Indian Naval Ships (INS) in order to protect from enemy radar-guided missiles during hostile situations.
- This makes India the second country to induct such technology only after the United States.
What is CHAFF Technology?
i.CHAFF is a passive expendable electronic countermeasure technology used worldwide to protect naval ships and fighter aircrafts from enemy’s radar and Radio Frequency (RF) missiles.Â
ii.The Significance is that this technology uses very less quantity of CHAFF materials, deployed in the air, acts as a decoy to confuse and deflect enemy’s missiles and ensures the safety of the Aircrafts and Naval Ships.
iii.The Defence Laboratory Jodhpur (DLJ), a DRDO laboratory, has indigenously developed three variants of CHAFF Rockets namely –
- Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR)
- Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR)
- Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR)
iv.The DRDO has also developed advanced CHAFF cartridge- 118/I for the Indian Air Force with better efficacy against higher frequency radar threats in modern warfare scenarios.
