On 5th June 2020, World Environment Day, In Asia-Pacific Annual Green Airport Recognition 2020 Airports Council International(ACI) awarded the highest Platinum Recognition to GMR led Rajiv Gandhi Hyderabad International Airport(RGHIA) for their effective water management under the 15-35 Million Passengers per annum(MPPA) category.
Green Airport Recognition Programme:
i.The Green Airport Recognition Programme of ACI promotes the environmental practices that minimise the impacts of the aviation sector on the environment and recognises a member of the ACI Asia-Pacific for their achievement in the projects related to the environment.
ii.The focus of Green Airport Recognition 2020 is Water Management.
Water Management in RGHIA:
i.RGHIA uses the 4Rs concept of reduce, reuse, recycle and replenishment for the water sustainability project and has installed a robust irrigation system and a comprehensive water management plan.
ii.India’s first Cloud-based Automated Irrigation System is introduced at the Hyderabad Airport.
Key Points:
i.RGHIA submitted their submission focused on water management documenting approach to the waste water management, water harvesting, water recycling and water reduction which earned the Platinum recognition.
Other Awards won by Indian Airports:
- Kempegowda International Airport,Bengaluru receives Silver Recognition under 15 to 35 million passengers per annum Category.
- Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi got the Gold Recognition and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai got the Silver Recognition in the over 35 million passengers per annum category.
