Background:
Proposal : At the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan in 1918, Mahatma Gandhi proposed making Hindi the national language.
Declaration: In 1953, former Prime Minister(PM) Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru declared September 14 to be observed every year as Hindi Diwas.
- The day also marks the birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha.

Official Language:
Adoption : On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language of the Republic of India.
Constitutional Provision: In 1950, Article 343(1) of the Constitution declared Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language.
Awards to Promote Hindi:
Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar: Introduced by the Department of Official Language(DoOL) under Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) to encourage writing books originally in Hindi and promote the official language.
Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar: Instituted to encourage the implementation of the official language.
Rajbhasha Chal Shield Scheme: Launched to recognize divisions, sections, and subordinate or attached offices that have extensively used Hindi over the years.
2025 Events
Official Language Conference: Union Minister Amit Shah, MHA and Ministry of Cooperation attended the 5th All India Official Language Conference in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, as the Chief Guest on the occasion of Hindi Diwas 2025.
Key Attendees: Gujarat Chief Minister(CM) Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister of State(MoS) Arjun Ram Meghwal, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs(MoPA) and Union MoS Bandi Sanjay Kumar, MHA attended the event.
Awards: Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented awards, including the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar, to government officials and organizations for outstanding promotion and use of Hindi.

Joint Publication: A book titled ‘Bahubhashi Bharat Mein Bhasha Praudyogiki aur AI ki Bhumika,’ co-authored by the Rajbhasha Department (MHA) and HUDCO, was unveiled, exploring the role of language technology and Artificial Intelligence(AI) in multilingual India.
Hindi Fortnight Celebration: The Ministry of Minority Affairs(MoMA) is organizing Hindi Fortnight from September 14 to 30, 2025.
